Screen Sharing and Whiteboard

You may want to visually show something to the students, such as a presentation, your desktop or a digital whiteboard.

This can be done using the green “Share screen” icon at the bottom menu of the Zoom window.

When you click the icon, you get to choose what to share. At the top of the options, you'll see your screen(s) and the Whiteboard. Below that you can select individual applications.

When sharing, a thin green frame will outline the shared screen or application.

Computer sound

By default, only your screen is shared, and the students will not hear any media or system sounds. If you need to share both screen and sound, check the Share sound box in the bottom-left of the dialog box before starting the share.

Who can share?

By default, any participant can share their screen. If this creates disruptions in your class, you can limit this feature to yourself:

  1. In the Zoom controls, click the ^ arrow next to Share Screen and choose Advanced Sharing Options.
  2. Under “Who can share?” choose Only Host.

Annotation

While sharing your screen, move your pointer to the green “You are screen sharing” ribbon to reveal the Zoom controls. Click on the icon labeled “Annotate” to write, draw or use any features (see below).

Whiteboard

Take some time to explore the digital whiteboard. You can write, draw, stamp, erase, undo, redo and highlight content to focus the students' attention.

You can also prepare and populate whiteboards in advance, then clone or save them for future sessions. Students you share the whiteboard with can zoom and pan as needed.

Note: A whiteboard session ends when you stop sharing unless students are logged into their own Zoom accounts. Typically, students join as guests, so they won’t have access after your sharing stops.
