Helping Individual Students

If you are running a technical class, you might need to help an individual student with a lab. This is easiest done by combining the Breakout Rooms and Screen Sharing features.

Any student can share their screen, as long as you haven't chosen to disable this feature for them. To avoid error-shaming your students, you can use the Breakout room feature.

Prepare

To create a support room, click the Breakout Rooms icon (four boxes). Choose to create one room only, and select "Manually" (If you are already using Breakout rooms for other purposes, use  the Regcreate or Add a Room features).

Start support session

  1. In the Breakout Rooms box, assign the student to the room you created.
  2. Click "Open All Rooms"
  3. Now Join the room yourself.
  4. You are now in a separate room with the student. Ask him/her to share the app or screen where your support is needed.
You should now be able to see the students screen and guide him/her, without involving the rest of the class. Note that you can use annotation to guide your student.
  5. If the student is connected with a fully updated client app, and also shared a screen rather than an app, you can request remote control:
    1. Next to the green "You are viewing <Student Name>'s screen" ribbon at the top of your screen, click "View Options" and then "Request Remote Control".
    2. After the student has approved your remote control, you can now navigate the student computer with your mouse.

Closing your Support Session

  1. Let the student stop the sharing, or do this yorself from the More Options menu
  2. In the Breakout Rooms box, close the session with the red Close All rooms button
  3. Return once more to the Breakout Rooms box, remove the student from the breakout room by clicking the digit "1" to the right of the breakout room (or tdeleting the room).
